How much do car drivers know about trucks? A truck driver knows it takes the length of a football field to bring a big rig that’s going 55mph to a full stop, but does the SUV driver chatting on a cell phone in the next lane understand that before he merges in front of that truck?
While the CDL training teaches truckers important information and provides them with a certification to legally drive semi trucks, the real classroom is experience on the highway. It’s out there on the road where drivers can learn how dangerous traffic can be, for drivers of 4-wheel vehicles and big rigs alike.
In addition to longer braking times, truckers also have to deal with reduced field of vision, wide turning, heavy weight, and vulnerability to wind. Just as semi truck drivers have to maintain an awareness of the cars around them, car drivers need to keep in mind the roadway habits of semi trucks.
Driver Solutions, a company that offers CDL training, provides a great infographic on how car drivers can share the road with big rigs, which you can view below!! After checking it out, leave us a comment below – what advice do you have for truckers or for car drivers about sharing the road??
