Heavy facility moved in England…but not the heaviest

How do you move something that weighs 55 times as much as the Statue of Liberty? Something this big takes more than a few trucks and elbow grease.

Machinery and Equipment MRO features the story about a really heavy job that took place in Hartlepool, England. The task was moving fully assembled and equipped oil and gas production facility that weighs over 12,430 tons.

This job required over 224 modular transporters, equipped with special roller bearings to handle the friction, to move the facility five-eighths of a mile.

Surprisingly, this is not the heaviest structure ever moved. According to the Guinness Book of World Record web site, that honor belongs to the Fu Gang Building of the Guangxi Province of China in 2004. That building weighed 15,140 metric tons, moved 35 meters, and took eleven days.
